Oooh, You Look Just Like Your Father

Before my first daughter was born, I could only imagine who she would look like. Would she have her father’s eyes? Would she have her mommy’s nose? Would she smile like daddy? I had my thoughts and hopes, but when she arrived was when the truth was revealed. Now, family, I was the one who carried her for nine months, nurtured her in my womb, and birthed her, so I thought I should get some credit for her stunning beauty, right? Welp, my dreams were dashed quickly because as we introduced little miss Nia to the world, guess what everyone said? “Oooh, she looks just like her daddy!”

So here comes baby number two, little miss Brielle. This time around, I figured, “Okay, things will be different. She is going to be my twin. After all, my tenacious child did not even give me a chance to get an epidural this time, so she must resemble me for sure.” So here comes my baby girl. When it was time to present her sweet, gorgeous face to everyone, I lost the Child Looks Like You Mommy Contest for the second time. The “Quinnise, she looks just like her father. You must have just carried both of those babies” comments started rolling in. Ding ding, husband, for the win again!

Guess what, child of God, you look just like your Father too! Genesis 1:26-27 states, “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.” So, let us break down the word “image” for a moment. An image is a representation or re-presentation of someone or something. Likeness means to resemble, be the same as, or similar to. Are you catching a glimpse, beloved? God intentionally created you to represent/re-present Him on earth and look just like Him.  While our sins and flaws can distort His image at times, our perfect Father and Creator made us look just like Him. To take you a little deeper, notice how verse 26 says, “Let us make man in our image and likeness…” The “us” and “our” are actually the complete package of the Holy Trinity (God the Father, God the Son (Jesus) and God the Holy Spirit). What a powerful image and likeness to be bestowed upon each of us family!

Even though we might not see ourselves as He sees us, God meticulously crafted you and me to showcase just who He is. Wow! Let that sink in for a minute. Now it is time to embrace who God says that you are and how He made you. The King of Kings, Heavenly Father, Savior of the world, Holy Spirit, Creator, and I could go on and on with all of His magnificent names, made you and me in His image and likeness. You are enough. God has deposited everything that you need in you for you to be all that He has called and created you to be. So now go forth and walk in the beauty internally and externally that you were lovingly created to display and represent in this world because you sure do look like your Father!

Reflect & Relate

What does it mean to you to know that you are made in Father, Son, and Holy Spirit’s image and likeness? How are you representing the image of God in your daily journey? What are some thoughts, people, or situations that get in the way of believing you are made in His image and likeness? Also, what gets in the way of displaying His image and likeness?

Let Us Pray

Dear God…Thank you for reminding me that I am made in your image and likeness. I am so grateful that you loved me enough to choose me to look just like you. Please forgive me for the times that I allow your image to get distorted and help me represent you and let the light you have placed on the inside of me shine brightly for this world to see you through all that I say and do. I love you and praise your holy name. In the name of Jesus, AMEN!
