Once upon a time, long ago, pre-pandemic, my church held baby dedications. After Pastor blessed each baby, he would present a Bible to the father and a rose to the mother. While presenting the rose, he would state, “I want to present this rose to encourage you to take some time to smell the roses because a mother’s work is never done.” Oh my sisters and brothers, my pastor was absolutely right. I cannot think of how many nights I have stayed up thinking of what I needed to do for my children, how many times I have planned this, organized that, and strategized the other. You get the picture.
A mother’s or father’s work for that matter is never done. My children do not always hear me when I pray for protection over their lives. My children did not feel me pumping multiple times per day while at work to prepare their milk for their growth and nourishment. My children did not always see me packing all the appropriate belongings as we prepared to take a trip or thinking about what we were going to eat for dinner each night. Guess what though, Mommy is always working for her children’s benefit whether the work is emotional, mental, physical, or spiritual.
Much like earthly parents, our Father, God is always at work. While we do not have the capacity as human beings to be working 24-7 on behalf of our children (even though some of us try), God does. Working on our behalf is the nature of our Father. John 5:17 states, “But Jesus replied, ‘My Father is always working, and so am I.’” This passage serves as a reminder that even if we are struggling to feel, hear, or see Him at work, God is always at work! I am a witness that this can be hard because I am preaching to myself right now. Just because situations do not appear to be turning around as quickly as we think they should, God is at work. Even though a circumstance did not go how we planned for it to go; God is still at work. Despite the chaos, pain, and sickness that we see in this world, God is at work.
Be encouraged my sisters and brothers. God sees you, He hears you, He feels you, and He is working everything out for your good. While we can oftentimes mistake His silence or slowness to respond (slow in our minds) as inaction, God is working and whenever God shows up and responds, He is right on time! Amen?! Our Father never slumbers or sleeps as Psalm 121:4 points out, and He is concerned about us as His children. God is always working and he will not stop working on our behalf.
Reflect & Relate
Take a moment to get a circumstance or situation in your mind that you have been struggling to hear, feel, or see that God is at work. Once you have that area in mind, repeat after me… “My Father God is always working. He never slumbers nor sleeps. He is working in my life and on my behalf, and He is working all things together for my good, even this situation.” If you need to write this down and post it somewhere that you can see it, feel free to do so, and repeat this activity as often as necessary.
Let Us Pray
Dear God, my Father, thank you for always being at work in my life and on my behalf. Even when I struggle to feel, hear, or see you at work, please continue to remind me that you are working. When I get the urge to try to work for you or fix my situation in a way that is outside of your plan and will for my life, please stop me. I desire your path, plan, and will for my life and acknowledge that you know best. Thank you for being in total control even in the times when I feel like my world is out of control. Help me to focus on you, your word, and your promises because I can trust you with my life. I love you, praise, you, and give you all the glory. In the name of Jesus, Amen.
With Mother’s Day right around the corner, why not consider gifting “A Glimpse of Our Father: Lessons Parenthood Reveals for All of God’s Children” to be a blessing in the life of a mother?!
